4.6. The Counting Method (part 3) ( ၄.၆ ေရတြက္နည္း - အပိုင္း ၃)

In order to know one’s own striving, the meditator should write down the times of counting breath in the record book in every session.

If he takes the meditation under the guidance of a teacher, daily report of the total times of counting should be submitted to the teacher. In this way, he should try to achieve the developing of counting of breaths day by day. Or he should try not to reduce the total number of counting times from the latest record. That is how the meditator should try to cultivate steadfast mindfulness by way of counting method.[1] According to Ven. Meay zin Tawra Saradaw, at the beginning, one should spend eight hours at least to take this counting method per day.

In the Visuddhimagga, the two kinds of counting; slow counting and quick counting, are explained. If one wants to count the breaths slowly, he should do as a grain measurer does. The grain measurer, having filled the basket, counts as one, and empties it. Then, he recites as “one, one” till he refills it after removing any rubbish that he may have noticed. In this way, he counts as “two, two”, and so on. Likewise, a meditator should begin to count the in-breath or out-breath as “one, one” and count up to “ten, ten”, noting each as it happens. Similarly, one who wants to count one set of in-breath and out-breath as “one” or two sets of in-breath and out-breath as “one” also can do so.[2]

For one who wants to count the breath quickly after the breath becoming evident to him can count it quickly as a cowherd does. A skilled cowherd takes pebbles in his pocket, a whip in hand and goes to the cow pen in the morning. He, sitting on the bar of the gate, prodding the cows in the back, counts the cows reached the gate as “one, two” by dropping the pebbles for each. When the cows come out quickly with group, he counts them as “three, four, five, ten.” Likewise, when the breath had already become evident to the meditator, he can count each breath which reaches the nose-tip along quickly as “One, two, three, four, five; one, two, three, four, five, six … seven … eight … nine … ten”. For the meditation subject which is connected with counting, the mind becomes tranquil by the support of counting, just as a boat in a swift current is steadied with the support of a rudder.[3] The Visuddhimagga mentioned that the beginner should take this counting method until mindfulness can stand on breaths without counting because counting is just for removing thoughts and establishing mindfulness on breaths.[4]
